LA CROSSE, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team scored first Tuesday afternoon in its nonconference game against Viterbo.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, it was the V-Hawks who scored last — and more often — as Adam Porteous scored seven minutes into overtime, lifting Viterbo to a 2-1 victory over SMU.
Juamaine Venter (Rochester, Minn.) broke a scoreless tie in the game's 65th minute, scoring his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Viterbo knotted the game at 1-1 nine minutes later as Jamie Robertson beat SMU goalkeeper
Chris Williams (Chicago, Ill.) to send the game into overtime, and set up Porteous' heroics.
Williams finished with five saves for the Cardinals, while Viterbo goalkeeper Jordan Stanek stopped three of the four shots SMU put on goal.
The Cardinals, who fall to 2-6 overall, return to action on Satuday, when they travel to UW-Oshkosh for a 7 p.m. nonconference contest.
