WINONA, Minn. — After opening its season with an impressive 3-0 win over Marian last Wednesday, the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team was hoping to build on that success against Ripon College Saturday.

The Red Hawks, however, had other ideas.

Ripon scored the only goal of the game off a header in the first half and held the Cardinals offense off the board in handing SMU a 1-0 setback at Ochrymowycz Field.

“We were just outplayed tonight,” SMU coach Chris Dembiec said. “We didn't get the small details right, we gave them every second chance; we took a couple of steps back tonight.

“This wasn't the same team that I watched play on Wednesday.”

Addison Ransom collected the game's only goal, knocking a cross from Alvaro Calle past SMU goalkeeper Phill Rendell (Denver, Colo.) in the game's 11th minutes.

Rendell and Ripon goalie Adam Haefner each finished with two saves.

“We defended well, but we just defended too much,” Dembiec said. “You can't play defense as much as we did and expect results.”

The Cardinals will try to get back on track Sunday, as they host Lakeland College in a 4:30 p.m. nonconference contest at Ochrymowycz Field.

“Hopefully we can turn it around quick,” Dembiec said. “It's nice that we get a second chance to play right away tomorrow, but we have to do something with it.”
