ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker Wednesday evening, as Bethel's Daniel Baah drained a 3-pointer in the game's final seconds to lift the Royals to a 66-63 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over SMU.
The Cardinals had the upper hand in the first half, grabbing a four-point, 32-28 advantage heading into the break. Over the game's final 20 minutes, however, the Royals outscored the Cardinals 38-31 — including Baah's buzzer-beater that broke a 63-63 deadlock.
The Cardinals led by as many as seven in the game's opening 20 minutes, before settling for the four-point halftime edge. Bethel scored 14 of the first 23 points in the second half to grab a 42-41 advantage, with neither team leading by more than four hte rest of the way.
With Bethel leading by two, 63-61 with six seconds remaining in regulation, SMU's
Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) drained a pair of free throws to knot things up at 63-63. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, there was just enough time for Baah to drain his game-winning trey before the horn sounded.
Gary Seifert (Prescott, Wis.) scored a team-high 17 points — including 13 in the second half — while Wright chipped in 16 points for the Cardinals. Baah netted a game-high 25 points for the Royals and scored 12 for the Royals.
The Cardinals, who fall to 3-9 in the MIAC and 8-9 overall, are back in action on Saturday, returning home to host Macalester in a 3 p.m. conference game at the SMU Gym.
