MENOMONIE, Wis. — Last weekend was good, but Saint Mary's University track and field coach Shawn McMahon wanted better when his Cardinals took to the track Saturday afternoon at the UW-Stout Warren Bowlus Invitational.
And what the Cardinals' coach wants, the Cardinals' coach gets.
The Cardinals'
Andrew Brueggen (Holmen, Wis.) and
John Kelly (Rochester, Minn.) each collected first place finishes and the SMU women posted three individuals in the top five.
“It was a very good meet for us, “ said McMahon. “We got tons of outstanding performances and everyone seemed to ramp things up a notch or two today.”
Brueggen won the weight throw competition for the second straight week, as the senior — who has already automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III national indoor championship — recorded a first-place toss of 18.27 meters. Kelly, meanwhile, posted his fastest 400 time of the young season, winning in 51.09.
Eric Stephenson (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) added a fifth in the 200 (23.14), while
Jake Traxler (Le Center, Minn.) and
Benton Kodet (Northfield, Minn.) were seventh in the 1,000 (2:41.93) and 600 (1:26.43), respectively.
On the women's side, Coco Booker's (St. Paul, Minn.) third-place throw of 11.81 meters in the shot put highlighted the Cardinals' effort. Sarah Harstad (Chatfield, Minn.) added a fifth in the weight throw (13.43 meters) and Regina Quandt (Minneapolis, Minn.) was fifth in the 800 (2:32.00), while Joanna Pace (Minoqua, Wis.) chipped in a ninth in the mile (5:50.72).
The Cardinals are right back in action next weekend, traveling to Superior, Wis., for the UW-Superior Border Battle.
