GameDay Preview
MOORHEAD, Minn. — For the second game in a row, the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team had to endure their opponent's half-ending run.
Unlike Saturday, however — when the Cardinals survived an 18-1 game-ending Macalester run to beat the Scots 52-51 — they could not recover from Concordia's 20-11 run to end the first half, as the Cobbers handed SMU a 78-49 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at Memorial Auditorium.
After building their lead to as many as 14 before settling for a 39-27 halftime lead, the Cobbers picked up right where they left off to open the second half, turning their 12-opint halftime lead into a 15-point, 53-38 advantage with 10 minutes remaining in regulation — and the Cardinals never recovered.
Jess Miller (Carver, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals, scoring a game-high 20 points on 8 of 15 shooting from the field. The SMU senior also pulled down a season-high seven rebounds.
Alexandra Lippert scored 18 points and led five Cobbers in double figures, as Concordia improved to 12-4 in the MIAC and 14-5 overall. Eric Nord chipped in 16 points, while Maggie Bauernfeind added 12 points and Lindsey Schultz and Tricia Sorensen finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Cardinals (8-7 MIAC, 10-8 overall) are back in action on Wednesday, traveling to St. Paul, Minn., for a 7:30 p.m. conference contest against St. Thomas.
