LAKE FOREST, Ill. – After watching his team control play for the first 20 minutes of their nonconference game against Lake Forest Saturday afternoon, Saint Mary's University women's hockey coach Terry Mannor issued a warning to his players in the locker room between the first and second periods.

Unfortunately for the SMU head coach, his Cardinals didn't heed his warning, as the Foresters erupted for three second-period goals and never looked back in handing Saint Mary's a 3-0 nonconference setback in the second game of their two-game series.

“I thought in the first period we really controlled the play, but I also knew that (Lake Forest) wasn't going to roll over – that they were going to come out flying in the second period.

How right he was.

Lake Forest pumped in a pair of goals 30 seconds apart early in the period, then added a power-play tally late in the stanza to seal the win.

Sarah Gustafson (Esko, Minn.) finished with 34 saves in her second straight start for the Cardinals.

“It's not that we played that poorly, we just came out a bit flat in that second period and (Lake Forest) capitalized,” said Mannor, whose Cardinals had skated to a 2-2 tie with the Foresters in the teams' season opener on Friday. “Overall, it was a decent weekend – we certainly have things we need to work on.”
