BLAINE, Minn. — The third period has not been kind to the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team thus far this season.

Just a day after giving up the game-winning goal in the final period of a 3-2 loss to St. Thomas, the Cardinals surrendered three unanswered goals in the game's final 20 minutes in falling to St. Olaf 3-2 Sunday in the MIAC Hockey Showcase at Fogerty Arena.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 1-0 lead, as Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) banged a Joey Nadeau (Winona, Minn.) rebound past St. Olaf goalie Steve Papciak at 6:28 of the opening period.

SMU maintained its one-goal, 1-0 lead heading into the third period, thanks in large part to the play of goalie Jason Horstman (Faribault, Minn.), who stopped all 26 St. Olaf shots through the game's first 40 minutes.

The third period, however, belonged to the Oles.

John Avino pulled the Oles even four minutes into the third period, and Jeff Warren and Ross Trousdale added tallies to give St. Olaf a 3-1 advantage. Ryan Griffiths (Arvada, Colo.) scored his second of the season with one second remaining, but it was too little, too late.

Jason Horstman (Faribault, Minn.) stopped 36 shots in his first start of the season for the Cardinals, while Papciak stopped 18 shots in goal for the Oles.

The Cardinals (0-2-0 Overall) return to action on Friday, traveling to Duluth, Minn., for a 7 p.m. nonconference game against St. Scholastica.
