IRVING, Texas —
Pat Freeman (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and
Tom Gores (Rochester, Minn.) each scored in double figures, but it was not enough, as Austin College outscored the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team 40-26 over the game's final 20 minutes in handing the Cardinals a 67-52 setback Saturday afternoon at the University of Dallas Tournament.
Freeman netted a season-high 14 points, while Gores netted a career-best 12 points for the Cardinals, who had opened the two-day tournament with a four-point, 75-71 loss to host University of Dallas on Friday.
The Cardinals shot 40 percent from the field (8-for-20) and were a near-perfect from the free throw line — going 9-for-10 — in the first half, as SMU went into the locker room trailing the 'Roos by just one, 27-26.
A pair of free throws by
Tim Kunkel (Northfield, Ill.) gave SMU a 41-38 advantage with 12:03 remaining in regulation, but Austin rattled off 12 unanswered points to take a 50-41 lead, a lead the 'Roos would not relinquish.
Freeman and Gores each missed out on their first double-doubles of the season by two rebounds, finishing with a team-best eight boards, while
Evan Pederson (La Crosse, Wis.) tossed in nine points.
Walter Phillips scored a game-high 15 points to lead three players in double figures for Austin, which won for the second time in three games.
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday, traveling to Oshkosh, Wis., to take part in the UW-Oshkosh Thanksgiving Classic. SMU squares off against host UW-Oshkosh at 1 p.m. on Friday, and then takes on UW-Eau Claire at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
