ST. PAUL, Minn. — If
Mark Ross (Dubuque, Iowa) was feeling any ill effects of having to compete two days in a row, the Saint Mary's University junior certainly didn't show it Saturday afternoon.
Less than 24 hours after recording a pair of first-place finishes in the Cardinals' dual-meet loss at Macalester, Ross was back at it Saturday, winning one event and finishing second in two more to lead the SMU men to a fourth-place finish at the Roger Ahlman Invitational.
Liz Flynn (Mahtomedi, Minn.) led the way for the SMU women, breaking the school record with a third-place effort of 233.60 in the three-meter diving. Anna Smaron (Orono, Minn.) posted a third-place finish and Linda Tierney (Cloquet, Minn.) added a fourth-place showing in helping the way for the SMU women, helping the Cardinals to a sixth-place showing.
“It was a pretty decent meet for us,” said SMU coach
Eric Lindquist. “We had some very good swims from a lot of people —
Mark Ross and Liz Flynn really excelled, which was great to see.”
Ross blew away the field in winning the 200 IM, stopping the clock in 2:07.93, three seconds faster than runner-up Patrick Dooley of St. Thomas. Ross followed that up with seconds in both the 100 and 200 backstroke, recording times of 57.26 and 2:02.23, respectively.
Neil Heacox (San Diego, Calif.) added a second in the 200 breaststroke (2:25.61) and a third in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.71), while
Robbie Doyle (Hudson, Wis.) added a third in the 200 freestyle (2:23.45).
Smaron recorded her third in the 200 breaststroke (2:45.87) and Tierney was fourth in the 400 IM, just missing the school record with a time of 5:09.92.
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2-3, traveling to St. Paul, Minn., to take part in the St. Thomas Invitational.
