ST. PAUL, Minn. — After an early season “tune-up” last weekend at the Tommie Relays, the Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams officially opened their 2011-12 season Saturday afternoon at the Hamline Invitational.

And coach Eric Lindquist could not be happier with the way his squads kicked off the season.

“For a first meet of the season, I was very happy with the way we performed,” said Lindquist, whose women placed second, while the men were third. “I saw a lot of pretty solid times for November, but we still have a lot of work to do.

“We're off to a good start, but we are no where near where we want to be come the end of February (at the MIAC Championships).”

Liz Flynn (Mahtomedi, Minn.) led the way the for the Cardinals, collecting a first-place finish in the three-meter diving (187.45 points), while placing second in the one-meter with a score of 212.30.

Anna Smaron (Maple Plain, Minn.) chipped in a second in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.11), with Linda Tierney (Cloquet, Minn.) adding a third in the 200 IM (2:27.30).

On the men's side, Mark Ross (Dubuque, Iowa) was second in both the 200 freestyle (1:56.78) and 100 backstroke (57.38), while Neil Heacox (San Diego, Calif.) finished third in both 100 breaststroke (1:08.29) and 200 IM (2:13.03).

The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday, hosting Concordia in a 1 p.m. dual meet at the Jul Gernes Pool.
