ST. PETER, Minn. — Special teams weren't so special for the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team Friday evening, as Gustavus scored three power play goals in handing the Cardinals a 4-2 MIAC setback at Don Roberts Ice Arena.

“Gustavus is a very good team, and you can't give a team like that power plays the way we did tonight — they'll just make you pay every time,” said SMU coach Terry Mannor. “You take away their power play, and we outscore them 2-1.”

GAC's Melissa Doyle netted the lone goal of the first period and Meagan Wanecke made it 2-0 with the Gusties' second straight power play goal 3:02 into the second period.

Nicole Olson (New Brighton, Minn.) answered Wanecke's goal with her ninth of the season 56 seconds later to make it a 2-1 game. The Gusties would add their third straight power play tally midway through the period to give Gustavus a 3-1 lead heading into the game's final 20 minutes.

SMU again cut the deficit to one, as Brooke Bartelt (New Prague, Minn.) scored her second of the season three minutes into the final stanza.

That, however, would be as close as the Cardinals would get, as Cartony gave GAC some breathing room with her second of the game with less than five minutes remaining in regulation to seal the win.

The Cardinals (8-4-3 MIAC, 11-8-3 overall) get another shot at the league-leading Gusties on Saturday, as SMU hosts GAC in a 2 p.m. contest at the SMU Ice Arena.
