Meet Results
NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Friday's St. Olaf Ole Qualifier was a first and a last for the Saint Mary's University track and field teams.
A first time competing against several fellow Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams this season.
And a last chance to compete before next weekend's MIAC Indoor Championships.
If the Cardinals' performance Friday is any indication, SMU coach Shawn McMahon is hoping the Cardinals' last is the first of several outstanding performances over the next seven days.
“We challenged everyone to step up the intensity — and they certainly responded,” said SMU coach Shawn McMahon. “This was a great meet for us — for many it was a final tune-up before conference. We had some outstanding performances, and, hopefully, this was just a sign of things to come.
“It was nice to get a look at all the teams we're going to go up against (at next week's MIAC Indoor Championships) — we hadn't seen Concordia, Saint John's, St. Olaf or Carleton yet this year, so it was nice to see how we stack up against them heading into the conference championships.”
Andrew Brueggen (Holmen, Wis.) continued his dominance in the weight throw, winning the event with a toss of 19.16 meters.
But the SMU senior wasn't alone in the spotlight, as Brittany Kuehn (Sauk Rapids, Minn.),
John Kelly (Rochester, Minn.) and
Benton Kodet (Northfield, Min.) also took home first-place honors Friday evening.
Kuehn breezed to a time of 59.68 — the only competitor under one minute ¬— to win the 400, while Kelly made it an SMU sweep in the 400, stopping the clock in 51.18. Kodet, meanwhile, added his first in the 600, outdistancing the field with a time of 1:16.49.
The Cardinal women also got solid performances from a pair of throwers, as Sara Harstad (Chatfield, Minn.) placed second in the weight throw (14.41 meters) and Coco Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) chipped in a third-place effort in the shot put (11.67 meters), while on the men's side,
Peter Borash (Bowlus, Minn.) added a second in the mile (4:26.35) and
David Feather (Oak Creek, Wis.) was third in the 3,000 (9:02.93).
The Cardinals close out their indoor season next Friday and Saturday, taking part in the MIAC Indoor Championships in St. Paul, Minn.
