WINONA, Minn. — For the 40 minutes of the game, the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team skated right with, and in some cases outskated, visiting Augsburg.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, it was the other 20 minutes that proved to be the difference.
SMU couldn't overcome a four goal deficit as they fell to the Auggies 5-3 at the SMU Ice Arena.
“When you get down 4-0 against a good team its very difficult to come back and win,” SMU coach
Bill Moore said. “For whatever reason we came out sluggish at home with the playoffs on the line and you just can't do that.”
The Cardinals got on the board midway through the second when
Tom Healy (Rolling Meadows, Ill.) tipped one in. SMU had other chances in the period, but couldn't put another one home.
“They have a returning all-conference goaltender, but we have to find a way to put one home,” Moore said. “We need to find more guys that can bury it consistently.”
Kevin Wentland (Columbia Heights, Minn.) and
Bobby Thompson (Centerville, Minn.) each scored goals in the third period for the Cardinals.
SMU (3-7-2 MIAC, 4-15-2 overall) is back in action next weekend, traveling to the National Hockey Center for games against Saint John's on Saturday and Sunday.
