MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — It took a period for them to get going, but the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team turned it on in a big way in the second period.
The Cardinals scored two goals in the second period took take control, as they topped Augsburg 3-1 to give them the weekend sweep.
"We came out a little slow in the first period, but then seemed to really pick things up in the second and third," said SMU coach
Terry Mannor. "Augsburg played much better tonight than they did (Friday in a 5-0 SMU victory at the SMU Ice Arena).
"Best part about tonight was we were able to complete a very important sweep — that's a huge four (conference) points."
Nicole Olson (New Brighton, Minn.) and
Brooke Bartelt (New Prague, Minn.) each found the back of the net in the second period to put SMU in the driver's seat heading into the game's final 20 minutes. Jessica Larkin scored late in the third period for Augsburg to cut the lead in half, but
Haley Coolsaet (Grosse Island, Mich.) put home the clincher 10 seconds later.
The Cardinals (7-2-3 MIAC, 10-6-3 overall) are now tied for second with St. Thomas, one point behind league-leading Gustavus with six conference games to play. SMU is back in action on Friday, hosting Saint Benedict in the first of two conference games at the SMU Ice Arena.
