BEVERLY, Mass. — The Saint Mary's University volleyball team opened the second day of the Endicott Tournament the same way their ended the first day — with a 3-2 victory.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, a second-straight five-set victory wasn't in the cards, as Bowdoin erased a 2-1 SMU lead to beat Saint Mary's 3-2.
The Cardinals could not shake Plymouth State in their first match of the day, as SMU opened with a 29-27 win in the opening set, dropped Sets 2 and 3, 25-23, 25-15, before rebounding with a 25-23 win in the fourth set and a 15-13 victory in the fifth and deciding set.
Kara Grant (Peosta, Iowa) led the way for the Cardinals against Plymouth State, collecting 17 kills, with
Carissa Hahn (Hutchinson, Minn.) and
Kaylee Bunne (LeRoy, Minn.) each adding 10.
Cathy Rennie (Pine Island, Minn.) dished out 24 assists and
Megan Leisen (Kellogg, Minn.) chipped in 21.
Erika Hurley (Chatfield, Minn.) and Rennie each collected 19 digs, with
Tara Rasmussen (Kasson, Min.) and Leisen each adding 15.
The Cardinals found themselves in another marathon match against Bowdoin, as SMU rebounded from a 25-21 Set 1 loss to win Sets 2 and 3, 25-22 and 25-19. The Polar Bears pulled even with a 25-19 win in the fourth set, then completed the comeback with a 19-17 victory in the fifth set.
Hahn recorded a team-best 18 kills, while Grant and
Mary Nordick (Plymouth, Minn.) chipped in 13. Leisen recorded a career-best 51 assists, with Hurley and Rasmussen recording 24 and 22 digs, respectively.
The Cardinals (6-2 overall) kick off Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, hosting St. Thomas in a 7 p.m. match at the SMU Gym.
