WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team held undefeated and high-powered St. Olaf to just one goal in the team's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown Saturday afternoon at Ochrymowycz Field.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, that one goal was all that St. Olaf needed, as the Oles scored the game's only goal 14 minutes into the second half to beat the Cardinals 1-0.

“The second half was just a lack of concentration and a lack of effort,” SMU coach Pete Watkins said. “It's a game that we tie, if not win, if we play the way we are capable.

“We make a bad mental mistake and (St. Olaf) capitalizes — it's pretty indicative of our second half, guys not on the same page.”

St. Olaf's only goal was scored by Nick Lund, who took advantage of a miscommunication on the part of two Cardinal defenders and converted off a feed from Stephen Johnson at the 14:04 mark of the second half.

Goalkeeper Chris Williams (Chicago, Ill.), who only needed to make one save in the tightly-contested first half, accounted for six saves on the day — including a pair of diving, acrobatic saves late in the second half to keep it a one-goal game.

“I thought our first half was very good,” Watkins said. “We had great chances to win the game. I was proud of what our guys did in the first half.”

Saturday's match was the first of three consecutive home games for the Cardinals, who are off until next Saturday, when they host Bethel in a 3 p.m. nonconference contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
