Cardinals open season with five-set victory over UW-La Crosse

WINONA, Minn. — Being that it was their first match of the season, the Saint Mary's University volleyball team decided to get in a little extra work against UW-La Crosse in their opening match of the Ground Round Sugar Loaf Classic Friday.

And thanks for a 15-8 win in the fifth and decisive set, the Cardinals came away with a season-opening, 3-2 (26-24, 22-25, 25-17, 19-25, 15-8) victory over the Eagles at the SMU Gym.

Amy Kujak (River Falls, Wis.), an All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection a year ago, showed her all-conference form against UW-L, collecting a team- and match-high 18 kills, while hitting .441. Kara Grant (Peosta, Iowa) chipped in 13 kills, while Carissa Hahn (Hutchinson, Minn.) added 10. Lexi Assimos (Northbrook, Ill.) dished out a career-best 53 asssits and added 12 digs, while Erika Hurley (Chatfield, Minn.) finished with a team-best 23 digs.

Lauren Probst had 14 kills and 15 digs, and Brianna Jacobson finished with 10 kills in the losing effort for UW-La Crosse (0-1).
