WINONA, Minn. — For the second week in a row, Liz Flynn (Mahtomedi, Minn.) flexed her muscles in the diving competitions, as the senior swept the one-meter and three-meter competitions against Saturday in SMU's double-dual against Carleton and Augsburg.
With Flynn leading the way — winning the one-meter with a score of 190.20 and the three-meter with a 214.00 point total, the Cardinals cruised to a 151-72 win over Augsburg, while falling to Carleton 153-94 to Carleton.
Taking the lead from his female counterpart,
Brian Baker (Wykoff, Minn.) also recorded a diving double — winning both the one-meter (171.55) and the three-meter (173.55) to lead the way for the SMU men in their 162-61 dual-meet against Carleton.
“I was very pleased with our efforts all the way around,” said SMU coach
Eric Lindquist. “Carleton is a tough, deep team and that depth was just too much. But we came into this meet not focusing as much on team finishes, but rather in individual performances, and we had a lot of very good individual showings.”
Along with Flynn's efforts in the diving competitions, the Cardinals also got a first-place showing from Abby Kratzke (Dent, Minn.) in the 100 butterfly (1:07.28), seconds from Anna Smaron (Maple Plain, Minn.) and Linda Tierney (Cloquet, Minn.) in the 200 breaststroke (2:43.90) and 100 breaststroke (1:15.39), respectively, and a thirds from Sara Jansen () in both the one-meter (146.65) and three-meter (168.45) diving.
On the men's side, Baker earned the lone first-place finishes, with
Neil Heacox (San Diego, Calif.) and
Mark Ross (Dubuque, Iowa) chipping in seconds — Heacox in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.51) and Ross in the 200 backstroke (2:04.09).
The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday, when they honor their seniors as part of the SMU Alumni Open.
