WINONA, Minn. — After equaling their season high with five goals in Friday's 5-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over Augsburg in Minneapolis, Minn., SMU coach Terry Mannor was hoping his Cardinals would continue its high-scoring ways in Saturday's rematch at the SMU Ice Arena.

Instead, Mannor watched as the goalies stole the show.

SMU's Sarah Gustafson and Augsburg's Crystal Amunrud were a pair of brick walls — each allowing just one goal — as the Cardinals battled the Auggies to a 1-1 conference tie.

After a scoreless first period dominated by the Cardinals — who outshot Augsburg 13-5 over the opening 20 minutes — Gustafson and Amunrud continued to hog the spotlight in the second stanza, as the Cardinals' Gustafson added a second-straight five-save period, while the Auggies' Amunrud was unbeatable on eight more second-period SMU attempts.

Augsburg finally broke the scoreless deadlock two minutes into the second period, as Jessica Larkin beat Gustafson for her fourth goal of the season.

The Cardinals got the equalizer eight minutes later, as Haley Coolsaet (Grosse Point, Mich.) scored for the second straight off assists from Jess Pederson (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Brooke Bartelelt (New Prague, Minn.).

Gustafson kicked out 15 of the 16 shots she faced, while Amunrud recorded 34 saves — including 13 in the first period and 12 in the third.

The Cardinals, who move to 2-5-3 in the MIAC and 5-8-4 overall with the tie, are back in action next weekend, traveling to St. Cloud, Minn., for a pair of games against Saint Benedict. The two teams square off at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, then play second game at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
