WINONA, Minn. — The first time the Saint Mary's University and Concordia women's basketball teams met this season, it was a last-second field goal that lifted the Cobbers to a 62-61 victory in Moorhead, Minn.

In their second meeting of the year on Sunday at the SMU Gym, it was a last-second field goal that wouldn't fall that proved to be the difference, as SMU could not covert on possessions in the waning seconds of both regulation and overtime in dropping their second one-point decision to the Cobbers, 60-59.

In a game that pitted a pair of teams battling for a berth in the six-team Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament, it was only fitting that the game went down to the final seconds — twice.

Down by two, 50-48, with 38 seconds left in regulation, the Cardinals' Jessica Thone (Woodbury, Minn.) decided to take matters into her own hands, driving the lane to score the game-tying basket with 26 seconds on the clock.

SMU forced a Concordia turnover with 14 seconds remaining, but their last-second shot failed to connect, forcing a five-minute overtime period.

In the extra session, Thone picked up where she left off in regulation. After scoring SMU's final bucket to force OT, the junior guard netted all nine of the Cardinals' points in the overtime session — hitting a pair of baskets to give SMU a 54-50 advantage, while adding five free throws in six attempts.

After a 4-0 Concordia run gave the Cobbers a 60-58 lead, Thone was fouled driving to the basket with 10 seconds remaining. She made the first free throw to make it a one-point game, but her second failed to connect and SMU was forced to foul.

Concordia missed the front end of the one-and-one, but the Cardinals were unable to corral the rebound and again fouled — and again the Cobbers missed the free throw. Brittany Begrowicz (Des Plaines, Ill.) hauled in the rebound and tossed it down the court to Thone, who could not get off a shot before the final buzzer sounded.

Thone finished with a game-high 20 points for the Cardinals (9-7 MIAC, 9-10 overall), while Jamie Stefely (Lisle, Ill.) added 12 points and eight rebounds. Tricia Sorensen led a trio of Cobbers in double figures with 16 points, with Emily Thesing and Alley Fisher added 14 and 13 points, respectively.

SMU is right back in action on Wednesday, hosting St. Catherine in a 7:30 p.m. conference contest at the SMU Gym.
