GRINNELL, Iowa — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team's final nonconference game of the season didn't go quite the way the Cardinals were hoping Tuesday afternoon.
The Cardinals, who close out their regular-season with Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games against Saint John's, Macalester and Augsburg, were looking to gain a little momentum heading into that final conference stretch, but Grinnell had other ideas.
The Pioneers scored a pair of first-half goals 20 minutes apart en route to a 3-1 victory over the Cardinals.
Joseph Brown scored the first — and last — goals for the Pioneers, getting Grinnell on the board six minutes into the opening half. Gabe Singer netted his first of the season 20 minutes later to push the Pioneers' lead to 2-0.
The Cardinals would cut the deficit to one eight minutes later, as
Mike Calderon (Prior Lake, Minn.) netted his first collegiate goal to make it a 2-1 Grinnell lead heading into the break.
Unfortunately, Calderon's goal would be all the offense the Cardinals would muster, as Brown rounded out the scoring with his team-leading 10th goal of the season with just two seconds remaining in regulation.
The Cardinals (6-8-1 overall) are back in action on Saturday, hosting Saint John's in the final regular-season home game for SMU seniors
Jacob Bina (Sparta, Wis.),
Kameron McKeeth (Woodstock, Ga.),
Gunnar Knutson (Minneapolis, Minn.),
Sam Puff (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and
Eric Lusch (Cottage Grove, Minn.). Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Ochrymowycz Field
