WINONA, Minn. — Nick Gualano (Propect Heights, Ill.) scored three goals to lead the Saint Mary's University White Team to a 5-3 win over Red in the annual Red-White men's hockey scrimmage Saturday evening at the SMU Ice Arena.

Bobby Thompson (Centerville, Minn.) got the Red off to a quick start, scoring on Red's first shot on goal.

From there, however, the first period belonged to White, as Gualano scored twice and Kevin Wentland (Columbia Heights, Minn.) also beat Red goalie Andy Scheib (Sun Prairie, Wis.) in the opening 20 minutes.

White pushed their advantage to 4-1 on a goal by Brad Denney (Fishers, Ind.) four minutes into the second period. Red answered on a goal by Tommy Robaczewski (Arlington Heights, Ill.) five minutes into the third period, but Gualano netted his third of the game eight minutes later to push the White lead back to three, 5-2. Ryan Griffths (Arvada, Colo.) got Red back to within two with a goal at 14:53, but that was as close as Red would get.

Jason Horstman (Faribault, Minn.) finished with 15 saves in his 30 minutes of work for White, while Christian Gaffy (Forest Lake, Minn.) kicked out 12 shots in his 30 minutes of action. Scheib recorded six saves for Red in the game's first 30 minutes, with Mitch Fernster (Ballwin, Mo.) closing the game out, stopping 14 shots — including 11 in the third period.

The Cardinals open regular-season play on Saturday, Oct. 27, squaring off against Bethel in a 5:30 p.m. contest as part of the MIAC Men's Hockey Showcase at Fogerty Arena in Blaine, Minn.
