WINONA, Minn. — Last Wednesday's heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Carleton may have eliminated the Saint Mary's University volleyball team from Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contention, but you would not have known it by watching the Cardinals on the court Saturday.
SMU — determined to give their graduating seniors the proper send-off — did just that, as the Cardinals cruised to a 3-0 conference victory over Gustavus in the final collegiate match for
Carissa Hahn (Hutchinson, Minn.),
Cathy Rennie (Pine Island, Minn.),
Tara Rasmussen (Kasson, Minn.) and
Megan Leisen (Kellogg, Minn.).
For the second match in a row, the Cardinals dominated the first two sets against the Gusties Saturday, posting a pair of back-to-back 25-18 victories.
Unlike last Wednesday, however — when SMU won the first two sets, only to drop the next three in falling to the Knights — the Cardinals completed what they started, posting a third straight dominating performance with a 25-19 win in Set 3.
Mary Nordick (Plymouth, Minn.) led the way for Cardinals, recording 11 kills while hitting .391.
Kaylee Bunne (LeRoy, Minn.) finished with eight kills, while Hahn and
Molly Grover (Zumbrota, Minn.) each chipped in seven and Leisen tallied six.
Lexi Assimos (Northbrook, Ill.) dished out 31 of the team's 35 assists, while
Lex Krogstad (Chicago, Ill.) and Rennie finished with 17 and 12 digs, respectively.
With the win, the Cardinals close out the season with a 5-6 record in conference play, while finishing 14-14 overall.
