WINONA, Minn. — It was a case of simple arithmetic for the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team Wednesday evening against Buena Vista.

One plus one equals two.

Gustavo Salas-Lopez (Carson City, Nev.) scored his first collegiate goal and Joey Petrich (Elk River, Minn.) stopped all three shots he faced for his first collegiate shutout, as the Cardinals ran their winning streak to two with a 1-0 nonconference win over the Beavers at Ochrymowycz Field.

The Cardinals, coming off a 2-1 win over Concordia last Saturday, battled the visiting Beavers to a 0-0 tie after the game's opening 45 minutes — despite holding a 12-7 advantage in total shots attempted.

SMU finally broke through in the 65th minute, as Sala-Lopez beat Buena Vista goalkeeper Michael Rydberg to a loose ball and buried a shot into the empty net for what proved to be the game's only goal.

Petrich, meanwhile, did his part in his second start of the season, stopping one shot in the opening half and two more in the game's final 45 minutes. SMU finished with five shots on BVU's Rydberg — including four after the halftime intermission.

The Cardinals, who improve to 5-6-0 with their fifth one-goal win of the season, return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday, when they host Hamline in a 7 p.m. contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
