ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's and women's swimming and diving teams officially kick off their seasons at 11 a.m. on Saturday, taking part in the Hamline Invitational.

Today's meet is the first official meet of the season for the Cardinals, who took part in the non-team-scored St. Thomas Relays last weekend.

November 5, 2011: Liz Flynn (Mahtomedi, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinal women, collecting a first-place finish in the three-meter diving (187.45 points), while placing second in the one-meter with a score of 212.30. Anna Smaron (Maple Plain, Minn.) chipped in a second in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.11), with Linda Tierney (Cloquet, Minn.) adding a third in the 200 IM (2:27.30). On the men's side, Mark Ross (Dubuque, Iowa) was second in both the 200 freestyle (1:56.78) and 100 backstroke (57.38), while Neil Heacox (San Diego, Calif.) finished third in both 100 breaststroke (1:08.29) and 200 IM (2:13.03) | Meet Recap

The Cardinals broke six school records at the season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships. … Graduated seniors Linda Tierney (Cloquet, Minn.) and Nikki Farmer (Medford, Wis.) each had a hand in five of the Cardinals' six record-setting performances. … Tierney broke the school mark in the 400 IM, stopping the clock in 5:03.05, while Farmer shattered the 200 freestyle record, touching the wall in 2:03.18. … Tierney and Farmer then joined Anna Smaron (Maple Plain, Minn.) and Abby Kratzke (Dent, Minn.) to break the school records in the 400 freestyle (3:50.81), 200 freestyle (1:43.98) and the 200 medley (4:14.93) relays. … Liz Flynn (Mahtomedi, Minn.) capped off a stellar collegiate career accounting for the Cardinals' other new school mark at last year's MIAC Championships, posting a score of 366.85 to finish seventh in the 11-dive, one-meter diving competition. Flynn also added a 324.65 score in finishing eighth in the 11-dive, three-meter. … Flynn had entered her final conference championships having already broken the six-dive, one- and three-meter school records earlier in the season. … Brian Baker (Wykoff, Minn.) — making his first appearance at the season-ending conference championships — collected a pair of sixth-place diving finishes, totaling 344.90 in the three-meter and 297.65 in the one-meter. … Mark Ross (Dubuque, Iowa) reached the finals in the 200 backstroke, placing seventh with a time of 1:57.54. … Ross also earned a spot in the consolation finals in the 100 backstroke, where he stopped in the clock in 54.51 to finish 11th overall.
