GameDay Preview
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — If the Saint Mary's University volleyball team was intimidated by Coe's gaudy nine-match winning streak, the Cardinal certainly didn't show it Friday evening.
The Cardinals raced out to a 25-9 win in the opening set and never looked back, handing the Kohawks a 3-1 setback in SMU's first match of the two-day UW-Platteville Invitational.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the second match of the evening wouldn't have as rewarding an outcome, as host UW-Platteville outlasted SMU — literally — winning 3-0 (27-25, 25-23, 26-24).
Molly Grover (Zumbrota, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals against Coe, recording nine kills, while Mary Nordic (Plymouth, Minn.) chipped in seven kills and hit a team-best .235.
Lexi Assimos (Northbrook, Ill) finished with 29 assists and
Lex Krogstad (Chicago, Ill.) tallied a team-leading 16 digs in the tournament-opening win.
Megan Leisen (Kellogg, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals against UW-Platteville, recording nine kills, while Grover chipped in seven. Assimos finished with 27 assists and Krogstad tallied 16 digs.
The Cardinals, who moved to 9-8 with the split, return to action Saturday, squaring off against UW-La Crosse (10 a.m.) and the University of Dubuque (noon) in the second day of the two-day UW-Platteville Invitational.
