PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University volleyball team squared off against UW-La Crosse for the second time this season Saturday morning.

Fortunately for the Cardinals, the rematch had a much more favorable outcome, as SMU avenged that 3-1 nonconference loss to the Eagles on Sept. 5 with an impressive 3-0 victory during the second day of the UW-Platteville Invitational.

And, unlike Friday's opening day of the two-day tournament — in which SMU opened with a 3-0 win over Coe, only to fall to the University of Platteville 3-1 — the Cardinals backed up their impressive win over UW-La Crosse Saturday with a 3-1 victory over the University of Dubuque.

SMU made quick work of the Eagles in their opening match on Saturday, winning the opening set 25-20, before completing the sweep with back-to-back 25-21 victories.

The Cardinals dropped the opening set in their second match of the day against the University of Dubuque, falling 25-22, but they rallied to win the next three sets, 25-21, 26-24, 25-23 to close out the 2-0 day and 3-1 tournament showing.

Molly Grover (Zumbrota, Minn.) and Carissa Hahn each collected a team-best nine kills against the Eagles, with Mary Nordick (Plymouth, Minn.) chipping in seven. Lexi Assimos (Northbrook, Ill.) dished out 21 assists, and Lex Krogstad (Chicago, Ill.) and Hahn tallied 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

Megan Leisen (Kellogg, Minn.) and Kaylee Bunne (LeRoy, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals against the University of Dubuque, each banging home nine kills, while Hahn, Nordick and Colleen Seba (Maple Grove, Minn.) all added eight. Taylor MacVey (Dodge Center, Minn.) and Cathy Rennie (Pine Island, Minn.) shared the setting detail against the Spartans, with MacVey recording a career-best 21 assists, while Rennie chipped in 13. Krogstad notched a team-best 18 digs, one more than Hahn.

The Cardinals (11-8 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, traveling to Arden Hills, Minn., for a 7 p.m. contest against Bethel.
