ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams proved to be the walking wounded Friday evening, which was not good news for coach Eric Lindquist — especially considering Friday's dual meet against Macalester was the first of back-to-back events for the Cardinals this weekend.

“Between injuries and illnesses, we're dropping like flies,” said Lindquist, whose women dropped a 112-83 decision to the Scots, while the SMU men fell 89-54. “Those that could compete tonight did a nice job — we just didn't have the depth to be able to keep up with (Macalester).”

Mark Ross (Dubuque, Iowa) led the way for the Cardinals, picking up first-place finishes in both the 200 freestyle (1:56.01) and 100 backstroke (57.62), while P.J. Heller (St. Cloud, Minn.) finished third in the 100 freestyle (53.48).

Nikki Farmer (Medford, Wis.) posted a winning time of 1:09.18 in the 100 backstroke and Tina Wahl (Elgin, Ill.) was third in the 100 butterfly (1:20.67) to pace the Cardinal women.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday, taking part in Macalester' Roger Ahlman Invitational beginning at 9 a.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
