ST. PAUL, Minn. — As if having to square off against Macalester in a dual meet with a depleted roster wasn't tough enough, the Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams had to do it twice.

The Cardinals, coming off a pair of dual-meet losses to the Scots on Friday, took part in Macalester's Roger Ahlman Invitational on Saturday, with the SMU men placing fourth, while the SMU women were seventh.

“It was a tough weekend for us,” said SMU coach Eric Lindquist. “We have been hit hard by the injury and illness bugs and it certainly had an affect on our performances.

“We had some solid swims — but, wow, were we hurting.”

Mark Ross (Dubuque, Iowa) led the way for the Cardinal men, placing third in both the 100 backstroke (57.17) and 200 backstroke (2:04.11), while adding a fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:58.62). P.J. Heller (St. Cloud, Minn.), meanwhile, chipped in a fifth in the 50 freestyle (24.14) and an 11th in 100 breaststroke (1:11.72).

On the women's side, the 200 medley relay team of Nikki Farmer (Medford, Wis.), Anna Smaron (Maple Plain, Minn.), Tina Wahl (Elgin, Ill.) and Ashling Meehan (Glenview, Ill.) were fifth with a time of 2:08.34. Smaron added a 12th in the 200 breaststroke (2:49.70), while Anne Raecker (Cedar Falls, Iowa) was 12th in the 500 freestyle (6:27.04) and Wahl was 12th in the 200 IM (2:46.47).

The Cardinals are now off until Dec. 7-8, when they take part in the two-day, St. Thomas Invitational in St. Paul, Minn.
