WINONA, Minn. — It was the first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game in the collegiate careers of Mark Schumacher (Perham, Minn.) and Will Swiggum (St. Charles, Minn.) — and the Saint Mary's University duo certainly made it a memorable one.

Schumacher scored a career-high 19 points, while Swiggum recorded his first collegiate double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the Cardinals MIAC opener against St. Olaf Wednesday evening at the SMU Gym.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the tandem's efforts were not enough, as St. Olaf surged to a 43-26 halftime advantage and handed SMU an 80-62 setback.

Schumacher knocked down 8 of 11 field goals — including a 3-for-3 effort from the 3-point line — en route to his 19-point effort. Swiggum, meanwhile, was also perfect from behind the arc, draining both of his 3-point attempts, while also going 5-for-8 from the free throw line in posting his second double-digit performance of the young season. The freshman also corralled a game-high 10 rebounds, including seven on the defensive end, to give SMU its second double-double of the season.

SMU shot 60 percent (9-for-15) from the field over the game's final 20 minutes and made 15 second-half free throws, but the Cardinals could not make a dent in the Oles' 17-point halftime advantage.

Connor Gunderson tossed in a game-high 20 points to lead the way for St. Olaf (1-0 MIAC, 2-2 overall).

The Cardinals (0-1 MIAC, 0-4 overall) return to action on Monday, when they travel to St. Paul, Minn., for a 7:30 p.m. conference game at Hamline.
