WINONA, Minn. — Shawn McMahon will be the first to admit he was excited about the opportunity for his Saint Mary's University track and field teams to show off a bit in front of the home crowd Friday evening at the Cardinal Open.

And his Cardinals didn't disappoint.

John Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn.) recorded the Cardinals' lone first-place finish, and Gabe Thiel (Elgin, Minn.) and Ryan Weis (Deerfield, Ill.) added second-place efforts for the SMU men, while Bethany Schmidt (Sparta, Wis.) led the way for the Cardinal women, placing second in the 600.

“It was a good meet all the way around,” said McMahon. “It's always nice to have a home meet — it gives our athletes a chance to compete in front of the home crowd. And for the most part, I was very happy with what I saw.”

And so was the home crowd.

Soucheray collected his first-place finish of the season, as the sophomore won the 1,000 with a time of 2:41.12. Weis was second in the 1,000 (2:54.68), while Thiel added his second in the 600, where he stopped the clock in 1:29.33.

Thomas Sigwalt (Geneseo, Ill.) added a third in the 600 (1:29.66), with Colin Sheehan (Austin, Minn.) making it a 2-3-4 SMU finish in the 600 with his time of 1:30.83).

Schmidt crossed the finish line in 1:44.50 to place second in the 600, while Regina Quandt (Minneapolis, Minn.) was close behind, placing third in 1:46.97. Amy Spitzmueller (New Brighton, Minn.) chipped in a third in the 1,000 (3:20.79) and Coco Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) was fourth in the shot put (12.50 meters).
