NORTHFIELD, Minn. — For the Saint Mary's University track and field teams, it was the final “dress rehearsal” before the season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships — and if the Cardinals' showing at the St. Olaf Ole Qualifer Saturday is any indication, coach Shawn McMahon for opening night.

“It was a great day all the way around,” said McMahon, after watching his team shatter one school record, while also posting several other lifetime-best performances. “We had so many people really step up and perform today — it was just season-best after season-best after season-best.

“Hopefully this is a sign of things to come next week at the conference championships.”

Peter Borash (Bowlus, Minn.) and Coco Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) stole the spotlight for the Cardinals, as Borash broke the school's record in the 1,000, clocking a time of 2:35.65 to finish sixth, while Booker won the shot put, uncorking a throw of 12.48 meters.

“Peter ran a great race, and Coco has been ready for a breakout like that all season,” McMahon said. “It was a lot of fun out there today.”

The efforts of Borash and Booker, however, were just the tip of the iceberg for the Cardinals.

Jake Traxler (Le Center, Minn.) moved up to third on the Cardinals' all-time list in the 1,000, stopping the clock 2:37.97 to finish 11th, while Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.) chipped in a 10th-place time of 4:35.37 in the mile.

Rebecca Iten (Fridley, Minn.) placed third in the pole vault, clearing 3.01 meters, while Kassondra Burtis (Fairmont, Minn.) was fourth in the weight throw (14.28 meters) and eighth in the shot put (10.88 meters). Regina Quandt (Minneapolis, Minn.) added an eighth in the 600 (1:44.95) and Amy Spitzmueller (New Brighton, Minn.) was 11th in the 1,000 (3:18.81).

“This was a good final tune-up for us,” said McMahon, whose teams will head to Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., for next weekend's MIAC Championships. “And, hopefully, this is a sign of bigger and better things next weekend.”
