ST. PETER, Minn. — Just four days after rallying from a five-point halftime deficit to beat Macalester, the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team found itself in a familiar position Wednesday evening against Gustavus — trailing at the half.

Unfortunately, there would be no second-half magic, as Gustavus turned its one-point, 29-28 halftime advantage into a 14-point victory, outscoring SMU 41-28 over the game's final 20 minutes in dealing the Cardinals a 70-56 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at Gus Young Court.

After a tightly contested first half, in which neither team led by more than four points and the game was tied on three separate occasions, the second half belonged to Gustavus.

The Gusties scored the first nine points of the second half and never looked back, building leads as big as 25, 66-41, before settling for the 14-point, 70-56 victory.

Jamie Stefely (Lisle, Ill.) scored a team-high 14 points, including 10 in the first half, while Adrianna Stephens (Madison, Wis.) chipped in 10.

Abby Rothenbuehler tossed in a game-high 23 points, with Molly Geske adding 14 for the Gusties (16-3 MIAC, 18-4).

The Cardinals (11-7 MIAC, 11-11 overall) are back in action on Saturday, hosting Augsburg in SMU's final home game of the season. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at the SMU Gym.
