DECORAH, Iowa — Saint Mary's University track and field coach Shawn McMahon was looking forward to Saturday's Norse Relays at Luther College — he was especially excited to see what his steeplechasers could do.

And Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) and Jake Traxler (Le Center, Minn.) certainly did not disappoint.

The duo won both 3,000-meter steeplechase events — Stolz taking the women's race with a time of 12:30.03, while Traxler stopped the clock in school record-setting time of 9:36.12 to win the men's race — to highlight the Cardinals' performances.

In a rematch of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships shot put competition, Coco Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) posted a second-place effort in the shot put, as the Cardinal junior uncorked a throw of 12.65 meters to finish second to Becky Culp of Hamline, who won the event with a toss of 13.21. At the MIAC Indoors, Booker delivered a career-best and fieldhouse record toss of 42-7, a mark that was broken by Culp's winning throw of 42-8.

In other individual events, Amy Spitzmueller (New Brighton, Minn.) was fifth in the steeplechase (13.02.86), while Tyler Kircher (Cashton, Wis.) was sixth in the javelin (38.83 meters), and Gus Wiggert (La Crosse, Wis.) was sixth in the shot put (12.75 meters) and ninth in the hammer (39.46 meters).

The Cardinal men's sprint medley relay team of Andrew Merkert, Mark Caark (La Crosse, Wis.), Alex Davis, Peter Borash (Bowlus, Minn.) posted a second-place time of 3:39.62, while the SMU women's sprint medley relay team of Laura Schommer (Hutchinson, Minn.), Rebecca Krueger (Ashland, Wis.), Kim Puk (Naperville, Ill.), Regina Quandt (Minneapolis, Minn.) was third, breaking the tape in 3:29.84. Davis, Borash, Colin Sheehan (Austin, Minn.) and John Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn.), also chipped in a fourth-place showing the 4 x 800 relay, recording a time of 8:14.37.
