Cardinals drop pair of 3-0 decisions

MANKATO, Minn. — The opening day of the Bethany Lutheran Tournament did not go quite the way Saint Mary's University volleyball coach Mike Lester had hoped, as the Cardinals fell to both UW-Superior and Wartburg Friday evening.

The Cardinals opened the two-day tournament with a 3-0 loss to UW-Superior, falling 25-18, 26-24 and 25-12. And things did not get much better in its second match, as SMU was swept by Wartburg 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 26-24).

Jenna Sullivan (Woodbury, Minn.)?led the way for the Cardinals against UW-Superior, collecting eight kills, while hitting .333. Lexi Assimos (Northbrook, Ill.) chipped in six kills and added 24 assists, and Lex Krogstad (Chicago, Ill.) finished with a team-leading 14 digs.

Sullivan was at her team-leading best again against Wartburg, as the freshman notched 10 kills on 31 attempts (.226), while also recoridng two of the team's four service aces. Assimos posted her second straight 24-assist match and Krogstad was again the team-leader in digs with 19.

In other opening-day matches — all won by 3-0 scores — St. Catherine beat host Bethany Lutheran, UW-Superior blanked Bethany Lutheran, UW-Oshkosh swept St. Catherine and Wartburg shut out UW-Oshkosh.

SMU returns to action on Saturday, taking on UW-Oshkosh and Bethany Lutheran in the final day of the two-day tournament.
