HAM LAKE, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's golf team shaved 14 strokes off its opening-day performance at the Augsburg Invitational Sunday, carding a 338 for a 690 total and a 16th-place finish.
Gustavus, which held a two-shot lead over Luther after Saturday's opening round, fired a second-day 297 for a 600 total and a 12-stroke victory over the Norse. St. Thomas was third at 614, while St. Olaf (616) and Saint John's (625) rounded out the top five.
Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.) continued to be the Cardinals' low performer, as the freshman followed up his Day 1 79 with an 82 on Sunday for a 161 36-hole total.
Ethan Austin (Northbrook, Ill.) shot an 85 Sunday for a 173 total, while
Will Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn. / 95-83—178),
Eric Zimmerman (Minneapolis, Minn. / 90-92—182) and
Bobby Glynn (Orland Park, Ill. / 95-88—182) rounded out the Cardinals' lineup.
Gustavus swept the top two individual spots, as Andrew Oakes shot a three-over-par 147 (73-74), while Alex Kolquist was a shot back at 148 (76-72). Tommy Koehler of Saint John's finished third (73-76—149), with Tobias Kohl of Luther (75-75—150) and St. Thomas' David Anderson (78-73—151) completing the top five individual scorers.
The Cardinals are back in action next weekend, taking part in the Saint John's Invitational.
