ST. PAUL, Minn. — Heading into their season opener Friday, all eyes were on Saint Mary's University's Coco Booker (St. Paul, Minn.), the Cardinals reigning all-conference performer in the shot put.

And the Cardinal senior did not disappoint, as she won the shot put at Friday's season-opening St. Thomas Invitational with a toss of 12.44 meters.

But she wasn't the only Booker to turn a few heads, as sister Maya Booker  followed her older sister's lead in winning the weight throw, uncorking a toss of 14.20 meters.

“Maya had a great meet, as did Coco,” said SMU coach Shawn McMahon. “Actually, all-in-all, I thought it was a great start to the season — we had a lot of people turn in solid first meets, and several others who got their first collegiate indoor track experience.

“I'm happy with how we performed.”

Clare Siska (Rochester, Minn.) chipped in a second in the 1,000 (3:30.39), while Jocelyn Moreno and Sara McNary (Deforest, Wis.) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 600 with times of 1:57.89 and 1:58.68. Amy Spitzmueller (New Brighton, Minn.) posted a fourth-place time of 12:34.51 in the 3,000, Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) stopped the clock in 5:37.15 to finish fifth in the mile, and Laura Schommer (Hutchinson, Minn.) placed sixth in both the 60 (8.43) and the 200 (29.25).

On the men's side, Peter Borash (Bowlus, Minn.) led the SMU charge, clocking a second-place time of 2:37.54 in the 1,000. Alex Davis (Champaign, Ill.) and Jacob Loechler () went 2-3 in the 600 with times of 1:31.48 and 1:40.04, respectively, while Jake Traxler (Le Center, Minn.), Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.) and John Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn.) were second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 3,000 with times of 9:06.01, 9:10.02 and 9:19.10.

Bryan Ortman and Phil Emmerich (Mondovi, Wis.), competing in his first collegiate indoor meets, posted second- and third-place performances, with Ortman finishing second in the triple jump (11.82) and Emmerich placing third in the 60 hurdles (9.76). Colin Hennessy (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) chipped in a fourth-place throw in the weight throw (12.26).

The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday, heading to Menomonie, Wis., to take part in the UW-Stout Open.
