GameDay Preview
ST. PAUL, Minn. — It had been more than a month since the Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams had taken to the pool in collegiate competition, and coach
Eric Lindquist wasn't really sure what to expect.
Fortunately for Lindquist, the Cardinals were far from rusty when they took to the pool Saturday for the St. Thomas Meet of the Saints.
“There were some pretty solid performances today, which was good to see,” said Lindquist. “With such a long break since we last competed, I wasn't really too sure what I would see today — but both squads impressed me a bit.
“This was a pretty tough field, and I thought everyone went out and performed quite well.”
Mark Ross (Dubuque, Iowa) led the way for the Cardinal men, clocking a time of 57.19 to place eighth in the 100 backstroke, then adding a 2:05.73 to finish seventh in the 200 backstroke and a 2:09.34 in the 200 IM.
P.J. Heller (St. Cloud, Minn.) also had a busy afternoon, clocking times of 24.83 in the 50 freestyle, 52.77 in the 100 freestyle and 1:56.38 in the 200 freestyle.
On the women's side, Anna Smaron (Maple Plain, Minn.) stopped the clock in 1:17.43 in the 100 breaststroke, while adding a 2:47.68 in the 200 breaststroke and a 2:33.63 in the 200 IM. Sarah Jansen (Manitowoc, Wis.) posted a 144.65 in the one-meter diving and a 130.50 in the three-meter, while Sivan Fogel (Haifa, Israel) chipped in a 1:11.16 in 100 backstroke. Other top times for the Cardinals included Anne Raecker (Cedar Falls, Iowa) a 2:20.94 in 200 freestyle, Kaitlyn McClay (Shakopee, Minn.) a 1:19.87 in 100 backstroke, and Abby Kratzke (Dent, Minn.) a 1:03.38 in 100 freestyle.
The Cardinals are right back in action next Saturday, as SMU heads back to St. Paul, Minn., to take part in the St. Catherine Invitational.
