EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team held high-scoring UW-Eau Claire to just two goals in beating the Blugolds 3-2 in overtime Friday evening at the SMU Ice Arena.
Unfortunately for SMU coach
Terry Mannor, the Cardinals weren't able to equal that feat in the teams' rematch at Hobbs Ice Arena Saturday, as UW-Eau Claire scored two goals in the game's first 11 minutes in handing SMU a 5-2 nonconference setback.
“We didn't play as well today as we did (Friday night),” said Mannor. “Mentally, we just weren't there today.”
UW-Eau Claire scored twice in both the first and second periods, before the Cardinals finally broke through early in the third on a goal by
Brittany Therrien (Brooklyn Park, Minn.).
The Cardinals cut the gap to two on a
Brooke Bartelt (Eden Prairie, Minn.) powerplay goal midway through the final period, but that was as close as SMU would get, as the Blugolds iced the win with a late tally to earn the nonconference split.
SMU (4-7 overall) are now off until Jan. 18-19, when they return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a two-game series against St. Thomas. SMU travels to Mendota Heights, Minn., for a 7:30 p.m. game against the Tommies on Jan. 18, then host UST in the rematch a day later at the SMU Ice Arena.
