STORM LAKE, Iowa — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team put together a smothering defensive performance Sunday evening in its nonconference game against Buena Vista — holding the Beavers to just two shots on goal.
Unfortunately, the second of those two shots — coming off the foot of Juan Rosales in the 86th minute — found the back of the net, lifting Buena Vista to a 1-0 victory.
After a defensive battle over the game's opening 45 minutes — in which SMU boasted the only shot on goal — the Cardinals turned up the offensive heat in the second half. SMU peppered BVU goalie Jordan Balster with five shots over the game's final 45 minutes, but came up empty each time.
Buena Vista, meanwhile, waited until the 86th minute to put their lone second-half shot on goal, as Rosales rifled a shot past SMU goalkeeper Joey Petich (Elk River, Minn.) to account for the game's only goal.
The Cardinals (3-9-1 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, hosting St. Olaf in a 7 p.m. contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
