COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — It took them more than 73 minutes, but Saint John's did something that Bethel could not do a week earlier — get a shot past Cardinal goalkeeper Evan Claffy (Joliet, Ill.).

Unfortunately, the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team, coming off a 1-0 victory over Bethel last Saturday, couldn't do something against the Johnnies that they did against the Royals a week earlier — get a shot past their opponent's goalkeeper.

Saint John's scored a pair of goals in the game's final 17 minutes in handing the Cardinals a 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback.

Claffy — who made seven saves in recording his first collegiate shutout in his first collegiate start against Bethel last Saturday — was equally as stingy against the Johnnies, stopping all five SJU first-half shots as the two teams went into the halftime break deadlocked at 0-0.

Alex Niederloh finally broke through for the Johnnies in the game's 74th minute, taking a feed from Zane Heinselman in the middle of the box and rifling a shot past Claffy.

SJU would push that advantage to 2-0 15 minutes later, as Rocky Harmon converted on a penalty kick to seal the Johnnies' win.

Claffy finished with six saves in his second collegiate start, while Ryan Brutger picked up the shutout in goal for the Johnnies.

The Cardinals are back on the road on Wednesday, traveling to St. Paul, Minn., for a 3:30 p.m. conference game against Hamline. SMU will then close out its 2013 schedule next Saturday, hosting Macalester in a 1 p.m. MIAC contest.
