ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team entered Wednesday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown at Hamline boasting eight players who had scored their first collegiate goal this season.

Make that nine.

Jose Martinez (Houston, Texas) found the back of the net for the first time as a Cardinal early in Wednesday's contest against the Pipers.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, that would be the extent of their offensive output, as Hamline scored a pair of unanswered goals — one in each half — in handing SMU a 2-1 setback at Pat Patterson Field.

Martinez got the Cardinals off and running, taking a feed from Khalil Ulibarri (West Jordan, Utah) and beating HU goalkeeper Derrick Mora just five minutes into the opening half.

HU would net the equalizer in the game's 22nd minute, then got the game-winner 10 minutes into the second half when Micahel Murphy ripped a Abbai Habte rebound past Cardinal goalkeeper Joey Petrich (Elk River, Minn.).

Petrich, who missed the last two games due to an injury, finished with five saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Mora stopped three of the four SMU shots he faced.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday, when they close out the 2013 season with a 1 p.m. conference game against Macalester.
