FARGO, N.D. — Saint Mary's University men's soccer coach
Pete Watkins had fine memories of his first trip to Concordia — the Cardinals' 3-2 victory was his first conference win at the helm.
Unfortunately — thanks to CC's Brett Wegleitner — Watkins' second trip to Cobberland wasn't nearly as memorable.
Wegleitner scored with 1:15 remaining in the second overtime to break a 1-1 tie and lead the Cobbers to a 2-1 victory over SMU at Fargo Shanley High School.
After a scoreless opening half, both teams found the back of the net in the game's second 45 minutes.
The Cobbers' Kristian Reiersgord got CC on the board first — giving Concordia its first actual lead of the season — as he beat SMU goalkeeper
Joey Petrich (Elk River, Minn.) 10 minutes into the second half.
CC would maintain that one-goal advantage until the 80th minute, when SMU's
Zach Palma pulled the Cardinals' even with his first goal of the season.
That, however, would be all the offense the Cardinals would muster.
The Cobbers kept Petrich busy in the SMU goal, firing 16 shots at the junior goalkeeper, who finished with a career-high 14 saves.
SMU (0-5-0 MIAC, 3-7-0 overall) step out of conference play on Wednesday, as the Cardinals return home to Loras in a 5 p.m. contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
