ST. PAUL, Minn. — Saint Mary's University swimming and diving coach Eric Lindquist was looking for another solid showing from his Cardinals in their final competition of the first semester Saturday at the Macalester Roger Ahlman Invitational.

Lindquist asked — and the Cardinals delivered.

P.J. Heller (St. Cloud, Minn.), Joe Tonda (St. Paul, Minn.) and Evan Lecy (St. Paul, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinal men, as the trio each posted at least one fourth-place effort in leading SMU to a fourth-place finish.

On the women's side, Anna Smaron (Maple Plain, Minn.), Rose Berg-Arnold (St. Joseph, Minn.), Marit Christianson (Cottage Grove, Minn.) and Grace VanBeest (Flossmoor, Ill.) all recorded top 10 showings in leading the Cardinals to a seventh-place effort.

Heller and Tonda had busy days for the Cardinal men, as Heller was fourth in 50 freestyle (23.89), sixth in 100 freestyle (52.28), and seventh in 200 freestyle (1:58.03), while Tonda posted fourths in the 200 IM (2:10.22) and100 backstroke (1:00.24), and a fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.43). The duo — along with Scott Carnahan (St. Cloud, Minn.) and Sam Keutzfeldt (Mahtomedi, Minn.) — also notched a third-place performance in the 200 freestyle relay (1:49.54)..

Lecy chipped in his fourth-place showings in the diving competition, placing fourth in both the three-meter (142.05) and one-meter (159.30).

Rose Berg-Arnold finished ninth in the three-meter diving (159.85) and 12th in one-meter (139.90), while Smaron was ninth in the 200 IM (2:32.51) and 12th in the 200 breaststroke (2:48.06). Christianson was 10th in the 1,000 freestyle (12:52.36), and
Ashling Meehan (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) finished 11th in both the 50 freestyle (28.33) and 100 freestyle (1:02.04).

"I was very pleased with the effort," said Lindquist, whose team is now off until after the semester break. "We had some very solid performances all the way around — which was good to see."
