NORTHFIELD, Minn. — For the Saint Mary's University track and field teams, Friday's St. Olaf Qualifier was not only one last chance to fine-tune before next weekend's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, but it was also a chance to see what some of the other conference competition had to offer.
“This was a good meet for us,” said SMU coach Shawn McMahon. “Heading into (Friday's meet), most of our people who were going to post qualifying marks (for the indoor championships) had already done so, so this was a chance to just get in a little extra work.
“Plus, we got the opportunity to go up against some of the other teams in the conference — teams we hadn't faced yet in any of the meets we competed in,” McMahon added. “Overall, I was very happy with the way things worked out.”
The SMU women stole the show for the Cardinals, collected three second-place efforts in the non-team-scored event.
Coco Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) placed second in the shot put, while sister
Maya Booker was second in the weight throw and
Laura Schommer (Hutchinson, Minn.) added her second in the 200.
Coco Booker, who earned all-conference honors by placing second in the shot put at last year's MIAC Indoor Championships, posted a throw of 12.65 meters to finish behind Concordia's Cherae Reeves, who won the event with a heave of 13.70 meters.
Maya Booker, meanwhile, launched a toss of 14.74 in finishing second in the weight throw, while also placing seventh in the shot put (11.05 meters).
Schommer also had a busy night for the SMU women, stopping the clock with a second-place time of 27.80 in the 200, while adding a fourth-place time of 8.36 in the 60.
Abby Osborne (Winthrop, Minn.) chipped in a fourth in the weight throw (14.38 meters), while
Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) was seventh in the mile (5:29.94),
Sarah Fanning was 10th in the triple jump (9.46 meters), Rebecca Iten (Fridley, Minn.) was 11th in the pole vault (2.62 meters) and
Beth Scott (Rochester, Minn.) was 13th in the 1,000 (3:27.21).
On the men's side, Bryan Ortman posted a sixth-place leap of 12.02 meters in the triple jump, while Gabe Thiel (Elgin, Minn.) was seventh in the 600 (1:28.28). Gus Wiggert (La Crosse, Wis.) finished 10th in the shot put (12.63 meters), with Jake Traxler (Le Center, Minn.) posting an 11th-place time of 4:33.88 in the mile, Peter Borash (Bowlus, Minn.) pitching in a 12th in the 800 (1:59.57), and Andrew Merkert (St. Paul, Minn.) and Mitch McNamara (Stillwater, Minn.) recording 13th-place efforts in the 400 (54.54) and 1,000 (2:56.54), respectively.
The Cardinals return to the Tostrud Center on the St. Olaf campus next Friday and Saturday for the two-day, indoor season-ending MIAC Championships.
