WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University track and field coach Shawn McMahon loves this time in the indoor season.

After a trio of lengthy road trips, the SMU head coach and his Cardinal teams got to strut their stuff on their home turf Friday evening at the Cardinal Open in the Gostomski Fieldhouse.

And strut they did.

Gabe Thiel (Elgin, Minn.) and Colin Sheehan (Austin, Minn.) led 1-2-3 finishes in the 600 and 1,000 to pace the Cardinal men, while Laura Schommer (Hutchinson, Minn.) placed second in the 400, and Clare Siska (Rochester, Minn.), Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) and Coco Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) added third-place finishes to highlight the SMU women's performance in the non-team-scored event.

“I love this meet,” said McMahon. “It gives our teams a chance to compete in front of their family and friends — which is always a nice treat.

“I was very pleased with the performances tonight — it was a very good meet for us.”

And while the rest of the team was enjoying their home cooking, three Cardinals were on the road Friday, taking part in the St. Thomas Invitational in St. Paul, Minn.

Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.) broke the school record in the 5,000 by two seconds, stopping the clock in 15:30.64, while John Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn.) and Jake Traxler (Le Center, Minn.) posted the third- and fourth-best all-time 5K times, posting marks of 15:39 and 15:40, respectively.

Back in the friendly confines of the Gostomski Fieldhouse, Thiel clocked a time of 1:31.0 to win the 600, with Andrew Merkert (St. Paul, Minn. / 1:34.33) and Phil Emmerich (Mondovi, Minn. / 1:42.14) close behind, while Sheehan stopped the clock in 2:49.09 in winning the 1,000, followed by Andy Meyer (Tucson, Ariz. / 2:55.19) and David Lunzer (3:14.72). Bryan Ortman chipped in a third in the triple jump (12.75 meters), Gus Wiggert (La Crosse, Wis.) added a sixth in the shot put (12.11 meters) and Colin Hennessy (Cedar Rapids, Minn.) was seventh in weight throw (12.18 meters)

On the women's side, Schommer posted a time of 1:02.56 to finish second in the 400,  while Clare Siska stopped the clock in 3:22.14 to place third in the 1,000, Stolz recorded a 5:28.75 for her third in the mile, and Booker uncorked a throw of 11.88 meters in finishing third in the shot put.

The Cardinal women dominated the 1,000, getting the third from Siska, while also placing fifth (Beth Scott (Rochester, Minn. / 3:25.78), sixth (Mary Hayes (Chicago, Ill. / 3:29.71), seventh Jocelyn Moreno (3:36.41) and eighth (Jessica Burns (Chanhassen, Minn. / 3:37.15).

Allie Thiel (Burr Ridge, Ill.) chipped in a fifth in mile (5:41.93), while Amy Spitzmueller (New Brighton, Minn.) and Sarah Fanning added sixth-place finishes in the mile (5:44.38) and long jump (4.83 meters), respectively.

The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday, traveling to Stevens Point, Wis., to take part in the UW-Stevens Point Eastbay Invitational.
