LA CROSSE, Wis. — Thanks to Mother Nature's wrath, the Saint Mary's University track and field teams had to wait an extra two days to get to compete at the UW-La Crosse Phil Esten Challenge.
But it was worth the wait.
The Cardinals, who were originally expecting to compete in UW-La Crosse's annual event on Friday — but the meet was postponed by wind, cold and rain until Sunday — got a record-setting performance from
Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) to highlight their efforts.
Stolz clocked a school-record time of 11:47.49 to place fourth in the women's 3,000 steeplechase, while
Ryan Winegardner (Northfield, Minn.) stopped the clock in 10:17.39 to finish seventh in the men's 3,000 steeplechase.
Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.) also recorded a seventh-place effort for the SMU men, clocking a time of 15:49.84 in the 5,000.
Jed McGlasson (Kenai, Alaska) chipped in a ninth-place time of 57.76 in the 400 hurdles, with Bryan Ortman and
Gus Wiggert (La Crosse, Wis.) adding a leap of 12.53 meters in the triple jump and a throw of 12.03 meters in the shot put, respectively, for the Cardinal men.
Along with Stolz's record-setting performance, SMU got a ninth-place showing from
Maya Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) in the hammer throw (44.22 meters), a time of 28.86 in the 200 from
Laura Schommer (Hutchinson, Minn.) and a leap of 9.49 meters by
Sarah Fanning in the triple jump.
