WAUKESHA, Wis. — It's been an outdoor season dominated by the performances of Mother Nature.
But week-in and week-out, the Saint Mary's University track and field teams have made the most of their opportunities.
And Saturday's Pioneer Invitational, hosted by Carroll University was no exception.
Kim Puk (Naperville, Ill.) posted a first-place finish in the 400 and
Clare Siska (Rochester, Minn.) led a second-third finish in the steeplechase to pace the SMU women, while
Ryan Winegardner's (Northfield, Minn.) third-place finish in the 1,500 and
Gabe Thiel's (Elgin, Minn.) fourth-place effort in the 400 led the way for the Cardinal men.
Puk crossed the finish line in 65.16 to win the 400, while Siska notched a second-place time of 12:10.47 in the steeplechase, with
Amy Spitzmueller (New Brighton, Minn.) adding a 13:13.54 steeplechase effort to finish third.
Ally Thiel (Burr Ridge, Ill.) led four SMU top 10 finishes in the 1,500, stopping the clock in 5:19.98, while Jocelyn Moreno was fourth in 5:21.72,
Mary Hayes (Chicago, Ill.) was sixth in 5:26.95 and
Bridget Hayes (Chicago, Il.) was seventh in 5:27.85. Abby Osborne (Winthrop, Minn.) chipped in fifth-place toss of 35.57 meters in the hammer throw.
On the men's side, Winegardner notched a time of 4:19.04 in the 1,500, with Thiel tallying a fourth-place time of 53.03 in the 400.
Gus Wiggert (La Crosse, Wis.) chipped in a sixth-place throw of 13.17 meters in the shot put and an eighth-place throw of 452.33 in the hammer throw, while Collin Sheehan (Austin, Minn.) added an eighth-place showing of 2:06.70 in the 800.
The Cardinals are back in action next Friday and Saturday, taking part in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn.
