GameDay Preview
WINONA, Minn. —
Brett Heimerdinger (LaGrange, Ill.) made his first collegiate soccer game a memorable one Friday evening, as the Saint Mary's University freshman scored the game's only goal early in the second half, lifting the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team to a 1-0 nonconference win over Cornell at Ochrymowycz Field.
After a scoreless first half, the Cardinals finally broke through five minutes into the second stanza, as Heimerdinger took a feed from
James Larson (Polson, Mont.) — who was also making his collegiate debut — and beat Cornell goalkeeper Jordan Setser to account for the game's only goal.
Joey Petrich (Elk River, Minn.) picked up his second collegiate shutout in goal for SMU, stopping both Rams' shots, while the Cardinals pelted Setser with eight shots — including five in the second half.
Matt Graber (Denver, Colo.) led the SMU offensive attack, finishing with three shots on goal, while
Zach Palma (Washburn, Wis.) and Larson each had two shots on goal.
The Cardinals (1-0 overall) are back in action on Sunday, when they host Presentation in a 4 p.m. nonconference game at Ochrymowycz Field.
