CHICAGO, Ill. — The Saint Mary's University and Dennison volleyball teams headed into Saturday's match as the only undefeated teams remaining in the North Park Viking Clash field.
And it was the Cardinals who left the court with that unblemished record in tact, as SMU handed the Spartans a convincing 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-15 setback).
SMU — behind the play of tournament MVP
Lexi Assimos (Northbrook, Ill.) — completed its perfect tournament run two hours later, as the Cardinals posted their second straight sweep of the day, blanking Manchester 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-19).
Alex Peterson (Harmony, Minn.) paced the Cardinals' offense against Denison, recording 13 kills, while Kenzi Lind (Rushford, Minn.) chipped in 11 kills. Assimos kicked off her first of two dominating performances with 30 assists and four aces, and
Lex Krogstad (Chicago, Ill.) compiled 19 digs.
Against Manchester, Peterson again led the Cardinals, collecting a team-best 14 kills, while Lind recorded 11. Assimos dished out 31 more assists, and Thomas tallied a team- and career-best 19 digs and Krogstad chipped in 13 digs.
Along with Assimos' MVP honors, Peterson and Krogstad each earned all-tournament honors.
The Cardinals (6-2 overall) are back in action on Wednesday, as SMU hosts UW-La Crosse in a 7 p.m. nonconference match at the SMU Gym.
